Khotang District is located in the hilly region of Sagarmatha Zone which is believed that the name of this district Khotang is derived from the name of one of the ancient Kirati King Khote who ruled this place. Some people also believed that there used to be lots of Khote Sallo around this place and once a king Hang used to rule this place so people started to say Khota Kaa Haang and finally it converted to Khotang. This place is situated in an altitude range from one hundred and fifty-two meter to three thousand six hundred and twenty meters. Due to the wide variation in altitude, we can find different types of climate in this district.

Most parts of this district have a Subtropical and upper tropical climate. This district is covered by Bhojpur in East, Okhaldhunga in the west, Solukhumbu in north and Udayapur in South. Majority of people in this place are from the Rai community as this place is also known as Majh Kirat. Apart from Rai, there are other Ethnic groups such as Limbu, Tamang, Bramins, Chettri and many more. An easy way to reach this place is by Air. There are three airports situated in the different location of Khotang District and we can reach there from Kathmandu in a few hours of flight. There are many places to visit in this district like Maiyu hill, Tyamke Hill, Merung hill, Malathumki hill, Baraha Pokhari, Halesi Mahadev, Majhuwa Gadi, Sahadeu Gadi are few of the best destination to visit in this District.

Places To Visit in Khotang:

Baraha Pokhari: It is a beautiful pond situated in Khotang district in Baraha Pokhari VDC. This lake has its own historical and religious importance. According to Hindu Myth, this lake was created in the time of God Baraha. This lake is situated at an altitude of one thousand and seven hundred meters and around eight hundred meters long and five hundred meters wide. The colorful fish in the lake and the crystal clear water makes this place best to visit.

Halesi Mahadev: This is one of the famous temples of Lord Shiva situated in Khotang district. It is believed that this temple blesses children and poor with knowledge and wisdom.

Dhodreshwor Mahadev: It is situated in Ratanchha VDC 2. This place is a place with religious significance as well as a great wonder of nature. In the cave of this place, there are several symbolic images of gods and goddess. We can enter the cave from north and west meanwhile there is an unfathomable tunnel to the east. There is an opening to the sky near the northern gateway which provides light to the cave.

Danda Kharka Hill: It is located in the boundary of Khotang and Solukhumbu at the elevation of 2500 meters from sea level, From the Danda Kharka Hill you can clearly observe top of the world Mount Everest (8848 meters) Lhotse (8516 meters) Cho Oyu (8201 meters) and Mount Makalu (8485 meters). 14 of the four highest peaks of the world can be seen from this viewpoint, other than those 8000 peaks we can also visible Mera Peak (6476 meters) highest trekking peaks in Nepal, Numbur Himal (6959 meters) and spectacular Mount Kysar (6770 meters). There are several other similar view point’s like Dharma Danda (4446 meters) Ghyangkharka (3612 meters) Runa Danda (3605 meters) offer a similar breathtaking view of the Himalayas of Nepal.

Salpa Pokhari: It is one of the best places to explore as religious, cultural and natural resources because of the culture and tradition along with natural beauty, with varieties of beauty and pleasure to offer which has a great potential to attract tourists from all over the world. But up to now, it is still very untouched by the tourist. This is the route can enjoy pure wilderness trekking in Nepal involving with pure natural attraction, historical culture, monuments temple, monasteries, local festivals, wildlife, highest hills, rivers, and mysterious charm.
